July-August 2021 Mekatilili Wa Menza Children’s Fashion Show: Celebrating Mekatilili Wa Menza As the name suggests, this fashion show is dedicated to Mekatilili wa Menza – a Giriama woman who became the first female leader in the Giriama rebellion. This rebellion was to start a revolution on 13th August 1913 against the British administration in a fight for the country’s independence. The children of Ubunifu Lamu Initiative honor and celebrate her on this day by showing off their creativity of handmade outfits created from traditional kishutu and kikoy materials. The fashion show will be accompanied by cultural dance and poetry representing the history and culture of the Giriama people and celebrating the life of Mekatilili wa Menza…an iconic heroine.
